A terminological movement is an organised or unorganised development in the way that Astronism is described and is usually lead by writers, religious figures, and other individuals with influence.

A terminological movement is a campaign lead by writers, influencers, and other figures from within Astronism who prefer to designate and to write and speak about Astronism using a particular set of terms, often involving a scenario in which the popularity of the terms religion, organised philosophy, philosophy, and even ideology are moves back and forth. Throughout the history of Astronism, these terminological movements have occurred as part of the wider discussion of the designation of Astronism.

The first of these movements is demonstrated through the writings of the Omnidoxy itself. It is widely understood and is quite apparent from omnidoxical writings that Cometan was initially against the use of the term "religion" to refer to Astronism. This is further demonstrated through Cometan's extensive concern for metaphilosophy and his development of definitions and explanations of Astronism that markedly avoided the use of religious terms.

However, a second movement occurred towards the end of the completion of the Omnidoxy and grew even stronger in a post-omnidoxical setting. This movement, which was lead by the core apparatus of the then-forming Astronist Institution, that Astronism should be referred to as a religion in common public discourse. This movement towards the use of such religious terms is known to have a multitude of reasons, the first of which was that during this time, the Institution was vying for governments to recognise Astronism as a legitimate system of belief. Many of these governments had a regulated terminology, one in which the term "organised philosophy" did not fit into. As a result, the Institution was forced to use the term "religion" so that those unfamiliar with Astronism in such governments would recognise it officially. The second reason for this movement is arguably that as Astronism entered the Establishment era, it began to resemble as more of a religion than simply a philosophy.

Despite these continued campaigns moving back and forth from the use of certain terms, the designation of "organised philosophy" regarding Astronism has always remained consistent. It is argued that if the public and other organisations had already understood the term "organised philosophy", these terminological movements would have developed as in many cases, the Astronist Institution and Astronists in general were often forced into pre-developed labels when in fact, they had developed a label of their own which continues to denote Astronism in the most accurate way.
